The Art of Shopping, Wearing, and Cleaning Pearl Jewelry
Pearls are beautiful organic gems that every woman would be glad to own and be able to wear. The luster of pearls is unequaled by any gem, and it’s why natural pearls are still extremely expensive. Pearl jewelry however can’t just be bought, worn, or cleaned in the usual ways. There’s always an art involved whenever pearl jewelry’s concerned, so here’s what you should know to make you into an expert in pearl jewelry.
HOW TO SHOP FOR PEARL JEWELRY
Before shopping for pearl jewelry, you first need to know what makes natural pearls different from cultured pearls.
Natural pearls are produced from a process where Mother Nature alone plays a central role and there is no intervention from man. Natural pearls are a product of chance; only when an oyster or mollusk comes into accidental contact with a foreign object or intruder that natural pearls may have a chance of being born. The oyster will then proceed to covering the object with layers of nacre.
Since the process is natural, it’s up to the oyster and nature what the pearls would turn out to be. More often than not, natural pearls come out in irregular shape and sizes.
Cultured pearls are those that are produced with intervention from man. By carefully choosing the type of object it inserts inside the oyster and by nurturing the health of the oysters, men are able to ensure that the pearls its oysters produce are of the perfect color, form, and size.
Natural pearls are more expensive than cultured pearls, especially if nature blessed them with exquisite form and color. Cultured pearls are sold according to size.
As mentioned earlier on, the shape of pearls can also affect its price. Round shaped pearls are the priciest. Other possible shapes of pearls are symmetrical and irregular, which are called Baroque pearls.
Sink your teeth into your pearl jewelry if you’re unsure of whether it’s natural or cultured. When the pearl jewelry under your teeth doesn’t have a fine texture, they’re sure to be cultured pearls.
HOW TO WEAR PEARL JEWELRY
Pearl jewelry is best worn sparsely. If you have a three-layered pearl jewelry on your neck, avoid wearing huge pearl earrings or rings and another three-layered pearl jewelry on your wrists. Pearls are better accompanied with simplicity and understated elegance.
Unlike diamonds, pearls can survive the light of day without being classified as tacky. Keep in mind, however, that pearl jewelry are not suitable to wear in outdoor settings, especially in parks and other nature-focused sites because pearl jewelry get easily scratched. It would also make you look silly when going fishing with pearl jewelry on your neck and wrists.
Pearl jewelry is best used with basic or plain colored outfits. It’s why Audrey Hepburn simply looked adorable in her all-famous scene in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Pearl jewelry will be noticed more if it’s set against a plain colored backdrop.
Do not wear three-layered pearl jewelry chokers if you don’t have a long neck. It will only make you look like a duck attempting to disguise itself as a swan!
HOW TO CLEAN PEARL JEWELRY
Pearl jewelry should always be handled with extreme care because they’re more fragile than other kinds of jewelry. For natural pearls, it’s best that you allow professional jewelry cleaners to handle them to avoid accidentally causing your pearl to have blemishes.
If, however, you’re determined to clean them yourself, natural pearls are simply cleaned the way cultured pearls are. Avoid using any chemicals – even if the product’s advertised as an all-around jewelry cleaning solution – with harsh ingredients. The same goes for laundry detergents and ultrasonic cleaners.
Never rub hard or briskly when cleaning pearl jewelry. Use a soft non-abrasive cloth when cleaning and wiping them.
When it’s time to store your pearl jewelry, always keep them in a place separate from other jewelries. Mixing these jewelries will allow them to scratch each other and guess which will come out at the losing end?
Only when you follow these rules can you be completely assured that your pearl jewelry will add rather than detract to your beauty. And remember, no matter how beautiful your pearl jewelry is, it still won’t compare to the beauty of your smile. So be happy when wearing your wearing pearl jewelry!
